Rockland, Maine has been a working community since the late 1700s. Shipping, shipbuilding, lime burning, commercial fishing and tourism have sustained its economy and built it into an important coastal city. As the county seat of Knox County, Rockland is also the business and service hub of a large area on scenic Penobscot Bay. The Rockland Historical Society collects, preserves and shares the history of this colorful community.

The Rockland Historical Society, located in the lower level of the Rockland Public Library, was organized in 1977, as the Shore Village Historical Society. We maintain an extensive display of Civil War artifacts and the archives of the Rockland Grand Army of the Republic. Collections include exhibits of marine art and local memorabilia. We preserve local business records, personal papers and several large photograph collections. We provide several free educational programs each year and have published six books on Rockland history and assisted in the publication of several others.

Please join us in our mission of preserving and promoting the history of Rockland and midcoast Maine.
